At Headwater Transportation, we’re no strangers to taking on tough challenges, but recently, our drivers accomplished something truly remarkable. They just wrapped up a run to Colville Lake, NWT—one of the farthest North we’ve ever traveled. This journey wasn’t for the faint of heart, covering 600km of ice roads, requiring tire chains, and pushing the limits of both our equipment and drivers.

Ice Road Safety: A Critical Priority

Driving on ice roads demands a level of skill, caution, and preparation that goes beyond standard trucking operations. These roads, often the only viable route to remote northern locations, present unique challenges such as limited visibility, shifting ice, and constantly changing conditions. Safety is always our top priority, and our drivers follow best practices to ensure they complete each haul safely. Some of these practices include:

• • Rigorous Pre-Trip Inspections: Before hitting the ice, our team conducts thorough checks on vehicles and equipment to ensure everything is in working order, especially when it comes to tire chains and ice cleats.

• • Speed Regulation: Ice roads require slower driving speeds to ensure proper tire grip and to avoid unnecessary strain on the vehicle. Speed is often adjusted based on the ice conditions, which can change quickly.

• • Constant Communication: Drivers are equipped with up-to-date weather and road condition reports to adapt to any sudden changes. Staying in contact with other drivers and the dispatch team is vital for maintaining safety.

The Challenges of Long Distances

Transporting loads over 600km of frozen roads isn’t a walk in the park. The immense distance alone presents numerous challenges—limited fuel stations, harsh weather conditions, and the remote nature of the route. Our drivers rely on well-planned rest stops, careful load management, and a steady supply of provisions to ensure they stay safe and prepared for the duration of the trip.
